Social Work Backed by Data

We are moving social work from good intentions to demonstrable results.
The National Centre for Social Studies connects research, data, innovation and everyday practice. We test what really works, challenge stereotypes that don’t, and develop new approaches to social problems. We work with experts, academia and frontline organisations, turning good ideas into solutions that make a real difference in people’s lives.

Innovation

We apply modern technology and design thinking to the development of social work.

Education

We provide training in social work, innovation, communication, and research and development.

Research & Development

We provide expert leadership and oversight for research projects in social work.

Social Work

We focus on projects centred on relationship-based social work.

We focus where

the system stops working.

We work with issues, problems and people that today’s social system cannot adequately address. We create and test new approaches where conventional tools fail, where help comes too late, or where it never reaches people at all.

People facing discrimination

Those whose opportunities are shaped not only by their circumstances, but also by prejudice, unequal treatment, or barriers linked to their origin, age, social status or life experience.

People who fall through the cracks

Those who don’t fit existing categories, don’t meet the eligibility criteria of individual services, or get lost between institutions, responsibilities and rules.

People the system doesn’t work for

Those for whom the current form of support does not bring real change to their situation. That is why we look for new models built on their actual needs, not just on how the system happens to be set up.

Our Projects

1

New Leaf Česko

What happens when, instead of yet another service, we give a person trust and CZK 100,000? This research project tested the impact of a one-off unconditional cash transfer on the lives of people experiencing homelessness and on public budgets.

2

Nothing Changes If Nothing Changes

The project aims to strengthen the competencies of social workers in low-threshold facilities for children and youth (NZDM) in the area of child and adolescent mental health.

Prompt Clinics

Artificial intelligence should save social workers time, not add to their worries. Prompt Clinics bring AI from theory into everyday practice and teach professionals to use it meaningfully, safely and in concrete ways.

Flins Software

Less time on paperwork. More time for people. Together with Arasoft, we develop AI-powered tools that make record-keeping, working with data and evaluating the impact of social services simpler.

MPSV Consultations

Good public policy is made when the system meets the reality on the ground. We bring hands-on expertise from practice to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MPSV) in consultations on the OPZ+ programme and on developing support for community-led local development.

Founders

As the identity of its founders makes clear, NCSS was born of three schools of thought: the experience of PhDr. Jiřina Šiklová, founder and long-time head of the Department of Social Work at the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague; the professional experience of the internationally recognised expert prof. JUDr. Igor Tomeš, CSc.; and that of Ing. Petr Víšek, director of the civic association Socioklub, who worked in the theory and practice of social policy.

Their experience led them to a shared conviction that a new non-governmental organisation was needed – one that would engage in the theory, study and practice of social policy and, above all, develop its regional dimension. This reflects the belief that the regional perspective on social policy – a programme of regional (and local) long-term social sustainability – is the most important aspect of modern social policy and also a key area of European Union social policy. EU member states have come to recognise that social cohesion across the EU is a positive precondition for economic development in Europe. Social tension is a limiting factor for economic growth. The common denominator of EU social policy is solidarity between states, regions, municipalities and people. Although social affairs remain the responsibility of individual states, the newly formulated policy of “open coordination” means following common principles and meeting agreed minimum standards (benchmark indicators). This gives the social policies of EU member states both direction and certain limits. The greatest emphasis is placed on reducing disparities between regions, for which the EU provides funding from, among other sources, the social and structural funds. That is why it is important to develop purposeful social policy in regions and cities.

This is also why the newly founded organisation adopted the ambitious adjective “national”: it seeks to fulfil the idea of cooperation between regions, cities, workplaces and institutions across the entire Czech Republic.
